"Dr. Linda Gromko has written a gritty, realistic piece about true life with kidney failure and heart disease. If anything makes a case for prevention and a healthy lifestyle, this book delivers!"
-Joseph C. Piscatella, President; Institute for Fitness and Health
"Complications: A Doctor's Love Story" by Bainbridge Island doctor Linda Gromko is a gripping drama that is half love story and half a journey into the daily fight for her husband's life against end stage renal failure. Twice divorced, Dr. Gromko still hopes to find the love of her life but never expects to do so beginning with the gift of an inheritance from a long-discharged, indigent patient. Far greater gifts--and complications--come to her and her beloved Steve as she follows her heart into marriage and becomes a mother to Brita, Steve's young daughter. Dr. Gromko explains everything about the realities of kidney disease, and in a way that readers can not only easily understand, but will also feel on the edge of their seats awaiting the next diagnosis, procedure, victory, or complication. Ultimately, this memoir is a stirring account about hope, commitment, sacrifice, and love."

Oh my gosh, I just finished the book and felt compelled to write a review. I laughed, I teared up, I related, I was in awe - and then I was all of the above at the same time. Even as I type this review I think how amazing it was to feel like I just went on the entire journey myself with the family. Having just been through medical journeys of my own with loved ones - it was a great experience to put myself in someone else's shoes for a bit - with all of the wit and irreverance that the book conveys that comes with walking alongside someone in the midst of a life or death health battle. The writing was personal enough that I could relate, yet it was clearly from the informed perspective of a health professional. The balance between "doctor and caregiver" was one walked by the reader through every page. This is a must read for everyone who has walked hand-in-hand with someone through medical challenge, and from a broader perspective a must-read for everyone who hopes one day to find the love of their life through the most unexpected of circumstance. Amazing that this is the first book from the author - I am already hoping there is a sequel, as I'm anxious to know what's next and where things stand for this amazing family on their journey.
